Policy on Minors
Known World Dance
8th - 12th June 2001
KWDS Policy on Minors (children and teens)
Minors are, of course, welcome and expected at Known World Dance Symposium.
However, parents should recognize that minors' needs are different from
adults', and ignoring this could impede the enjoyment of all
at the event, as well as create safety concerns. The following policies were
developed for the enjoyment and safety of everyone at the event.
This event is primarily aimed at adults and children who partake in dance
and have a serious interest in dance. Parents intending to bring any
minors to the event should be aware that there is no event
programming specifically for children or teens, and no programming planned
for children who are not interested in dancing.
Babysitting is not being provided by event staff or Boston University staff.
The following policies must be observed. These policies are minimum
standards that apply to all minors. If a parent knows their child
requires greater supervision than stipulated, then that parent should use
their best judgement. Failure to follow these policies or use appropriate
parenting skills and judgement may lead to warnings or removal from the
event at the autocrat's discretion.
- All minors must carry on them parental contact information
in an obvious place.
The cell phone number of the on-site adult responsible is strongly encouraged.
- Participation of minors in any class is entirely at the
discretion of the instructor.
The instructors have the right to revoke their permission if a
minor is behaving inappropriately or if the class is being disrupted.
(Crying babies are considered disruptive and should be taken outside the
classroom if they cannot be settled down quickly.) Event staff will always
back up the instructor in any disagreement.
- All children 12 and under must be accompanied at all times
by an adult.
That adult need not be the child's parent. Any such arrangement should be
made privately between the parent and the adult involved. Event staff are
not responsible for making such arrangements and are not required
to be the adult. Unless pre-verbal, the child must be able to identify the
adult responsible for them at any given time by name and sight. Similarly,
the adult responsible for a child must know that they are responsible for
the child and be able to identify the child by name and sight.
- Minors ages 13 to 14 must carry the contact information as
above, and still require an adult responsible for them, however that
adult need not accompany the teen. As above, that adult need not be the
teen's parent. Any such arrangement should be made privately between the
parent and the adult involved. Event staff are not responsible for making
such arrangements and are not required to be the adult responsible.
The teen must be able to identify the adult responsible for
them at any given time by name and sight and know where that adult can be
found. Similarly, the adult responsible for a teen must know that they are
responsible for the teen and be able to identify the teen by name and sight
and know where the teen can be found. The adult responsible and the teen
should be in the same area of the event (both in class space or both in the
- Minors 15 and older must carry the contact information
